Home Sleep Testing

The Path to Relief Starts With Dr. Mandel’s Thorough Evaluation

Chronic snoring can be a nightmare for both you and your partner. The most common cause of snoring in adults is known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA occurs when your throat and airway muscles relax during sleep, causing your airway to narrow or even close as you breathe. This causes loud, jarring snoring and can prevent your brain from getting enough oxygen. Not only does OSA result in a poor night’s rest, but it can have potentially lethal long-term consequences. Dr. Mandel utilizes a convenient, at-home sleep test to help diagnose OSA.

Overview Of Home Sleep Testing

Most physicians use an uncomfortable, third-party facility for sleep testing. Dr. Mandel and the team at Florida Sinus & Snoring Specialists use specialized home sleep testing kits to evaluate and diagnose your OSA, as opposed to a third-party facility. Not only is this more convenient and comfortable, but it forms the basis of your individualized treatment plan. Effective treatment depends on your unique anatomical makeup and points of discomfort, so identifying the underlying causes of your OSA with the utmost accuracy is essential. Third-party facilities often report skewed data as a result of patients waking up. With thousands of patients successfully treated, Dr. Mandel has found that the most accurate results are recorded from the comfort of your own home.

Testing Is the First Step To Successful Treatment!

OSA affects the throat and the often-overlooked nasal passage. Dr. Mandel’s specialized home sleep testing kits accurately identify narrowed and softened areas of the oral and nasal cavity (including a softened palate). This is integral in determining the unique causes of your condition. Simply wear the unobtrusive sleep monitor while sleeping, and Dr. Mandel will personally evaluate your results to tailor your treatment plan.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Despite affecting an estimated 25 million adults, many people are still unaware of what obstructive sleep apnea is. At the most basic level, sleep apnea is the stopping and starting of your breath during sleep. There are three types of sleep apnea – obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea syndrome.

OSA is, as the name suggests, caused by an obstruction in your airway. Central sleep apnea is caused by a miscommunication between your brain, central nervous system, and respiratory system. Complex sleep apnea syndrome is a combination of OSA and CSA. OSA is by far the most common type of sleep apnea. It’s estimated to be the cause of 75 percent of sleep apnea cases worldwide.

So, what obstructs the airway and causes OSA? The soft tissue in your throat, including your tongue and soft palate. The muscles that support this tissue relaxes, causing the tissue to expand and constrict your airway.

Traditional vs Home Sleep Testing

Polysomnography, the umbrella term for various types of sleep studies and tests, is nothing new. It’s been around in various forms since the early 1900s. Thankfully, the methods we use today are more advanced and accurate than what doctors were doing over a century ago. Dr. Mandel brings this testing process even further into the future by introducing it into the comfort of your home.

At-home sleep testing is specially designed to help identify and diagnose OSA. Dr. Mandel’s home sleep testing kits monitor key areas to help deliver a personalized and accurate overview of your respiratory functions while sleeping.
