Side Effects of Common Nasal Drugs

There are a lot of nasal pharmaceutical treatments available to people suffering from sinus infections, dry sinuses, or allergies. However, what you may not know is some of these drugs can have serious side effects.

For example, Itraconazole is prescribed as a treatment for fungal cell membrane formation. It’s an antifungal medication that actually has more than 52 listed side effects a patient can experience. Some of these side effects include fever, nausea, convulsions, vomiting, trouble breathing, and muscle cramps. More severe side effects include such things as chest pain, vomiting blood, yellow skin and eyes, and trouble breathing. What’s interesting is fungal sinusitis, or a candida overgrowth, usually begins in the gastrointestinal tract and expands throughout the body. A full candida regimen is needed to treat this overgrowth, so a nasal product is insufficient to eliminate the problem.

Mupirocin, a nasal antibiotic used to deal with a Staphylococcus aureus bacterial (staff) infection, also carries a number of serious side effects. Some patients who take this to treat their staff infections can experience severe diarrhea, which can happen up to 2 months after taking it. Other symptoms include severe abdominal cramps, swelling of the eyelids, hives or welts, dizziness, and a fast heartbeat. Additionally, recent studies suggest antibiotics play a part in creating chronic sinusitis by simultaneously killing off harmful and healthy bacteria in the body. Some people also become immune to antibiotics, which can be dangerous if you have severe bacterial issues later in life.

Another medication, Triamcinolone, is a corticosteroid for nasal allergies designed to block the histamine response. However, it does cause side effects such as headache, heartburn, diarrhea, stomach pain, severe or frequent nosebleeds, and even vision problems.

If you’re having problems with your sinuses, the strongest nasal medication may not be the best solution for you. A different antibiotic may not solve your problem when a different approach may be the solution. If you have chronic sinusitis, you want to do more for your body than going from doctor to doctor and antibiotic to antibiotic. Let us talk to you in an appointment to see if we can offer you more effective and less dangerous solutions.
