Save Your Sinuses—Switch to Cinnamon

As it gets closer to Fall, more people will be integrating cinnamon into their dishes. It’s a fantastic spice, used to liven up hot drinks and pumpkin pie. However, it can also be used to improve your sinus health. Cinnamon has several properties that make it useful for combating fungal growth and bacterial infections. Here are a few advantages cinnamon can offer you.

Fighting Fungal Infections

Scientists have witnessed the effectiveness of treating respiratory tract infections caused by fungi. Cinnamon has properties that help inhibit the growth of fungi, including candida. In lab tests, cinnamon extracts were used to stop the growth of many yeasts, some of which had become resistant to the antifungal medication fluconazole. Cinnamon can be especially useful to those with thrush, a fungal candida, which has spread to the tongue and throat. Consider adding cinnamon to your other antifungal treatments.

Fighting Bacterial Infections

Cinnamon, particularly the oil in cinnamon, has also been known to stop the growth of salmonella and listeria, two potentially damaging species of bacteria. It’s still not clear whether this antibacterial property applies to more than just these two species, but adding cinnamon to your diet might be a good idea.

Anti-Inflammatory

Cinnamon has antioxidant properties that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory benefits. Sinusitis is caused by inflamed mucous membranes. The inflammation could come from numerous sources, including stress, emotions, fungal infections, inflammatory foods, and dry air. The long-term effects of inflammation precede many chronic conditions and diseases, so using cinnamon in your food or drink might be beneficial.

Improving Breath

Because it has bacteria-fighting properties, cinnamon can have benefits on your mouth. Sinusitis and other sinus issues can often cause what is called “sinus breath.” This odor can be eliminated by gargling with cinnamon.
