How to Cure Your Chronic Sinusitis in 15 Minutes

Chronic sinusitis, also known as the dreaded sinus infection, affects more than 30 million Americans each year. If you’re one of the millions suffering, it isn’t even news at all. What you may not know, though, is that sinusitis disproportionately affects older Americans. The age groups most prone to developing sinusitis are those 65 to 74 years old and those over the age of 75, this according to the CDC. Given the percentage of seniors in South Florida, this means there are millions upon millions of people suffering and in need of sinus treatment in our own community.

Thankfully, Dr. Lee Mandel is an expert Rhinologist located right here in South Florida! We’ll look at different sinus infection remedy options and let you know how you can cure your chronic sinusitis in as little as 15 minutes.

sinus infectionWhat is Chronic Sinusitis?

Sinusitis occurs when your sinus cavity becomes infected. This results in swelling and inflammation, which then results in the build-up of mucus. Think of it as a one-two punch of nasal nastiness. Sinus infections bring with them all sorts of unpleasant symptoms including:

  • Congestion and difficulty breathing
  • Facial pain
  • Sore throat and coughing
  • Dense, unpleasant nasal discharge
  • Postnasal drip
  • Lethargy and fatigue
  • Reduced sense of smell and taste

So, now that you can recognize the symptoms, what are your sinus infection treatment options?

Sinus Infection Remedy Options

Let’s start with sinus infection remedy choices you can find in your medicine cabinet. Your first line of defense is over-the-counter nasal sprays. While these won’t cure your sinusitis, they may reduce symptoms before your appointment with us.

Then there is nasal irrigation. This is a form of sinus drainage treatment which uses something called a neti pot to introduce distilled water or saline solution into your nasal cavity. The water helps clear away infected tissue and any blocked mucus. It also thins out your mucus, which makes the cilia in your nose (naturally occurring “nasal protectors” that are like tiny strands of hair) more effective at trapping and killing bacteria, in addition to other infectious agents.

Other home sinus infection treatments include:

  • OTC nasal sprays – Afrin, Nasacort, etc.
  • Natural options – ginger, grape seed extract, and thyme may help reduce sinusitis symptoms.
  • Acupressure – an alternative technique that uses pressure points on your face to help reduce symptoms.

It is important to note that none of these sinus drainage treatment options will cure chronic sinusitis– they temporarily mask the symptoms. For quick, lasting relief, consider a balloon sinuplasty procedure.

Balloon sinuplasty is a relatively recent type of sinus infection treatment. It’s performed by inserting a balloon catheter into your nasal cavity and inflating it. This opens up congested sinuses, helping mucus and other fluid to drain out. Once the nasal cavity is drained, you’ll then receive a sterile saline flush, which further drains your sinuses. The catheter is then removed, and the minimally invasive procedure is completed.

The best part about this innovative sinus treatment is that it’s often completed within 15 to 20 minutes. Most patients can return to their normal activities within 24 to 48 hours of their procedure.
