Allergies are the way the body responds to an allergen. Allergens are harmless themselves, however, for some people, allergens can cause a reaction to occur. If your body’s chemical makeup cannot properly process an allergen, your body will respond. This response can range from mild (watery eyes and post nasal drip) to severe (anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction.) For many people, the type of allergen that is causing a reaction is not obvious. In order to pinpoint the allergen that is causing an allergic reaction, an allergy test will need to be conducted.
An allergy test involves mixing suspected allergens with liquid to create a solution. A drop of the solution is placed on the skin. As many as 12 drops can be placed on the skin at once, and the portion of the skin is marked to indicate what type of allergen was placed where. Once the drops are placed, the skin underneath each drop of solution is pricked with a needle, which allows a small amount of the allergen to penetrate the skin. The skin is then observed to see if there is a reaction. If there is, the allergen is identified and proper treatment can be administered.
